Late Payments Are Now the Norm, Not the Exception

There was a time when a late invoice felt like the exception, a one-off, a supplier having a bad month. That is no longer true. In 2026, being paid late is closer to the default.
New data shows 92% of invoices are now paid after their due date, up from 87% just a few years ago, with the average small business now waiting 28.8 days beyond terms to get paid. That is not a rounding error. It is a structural shift in how businesses are treating payment terms.
The cost is not abstract either. Late payments cost the UK economy roughly £11 billion a year and contribute to the closure of around 14,000 businesses annually, while in the US, late payments are linked to one in four business bankruptcies, with the average small business losing close to $39,000 a year to the knock-on effects.
Why This Keeps Getting Worse, Not Better
It would be easy to assume this is a symptom of a difficult economy, and to some extent it is. But the more consistent driver is process, not intent. Businesses are not necessarily choosing to pay late. They are stuck behind approval chains, manual invoice matching, and payment runs that only happen on fixed weekly or monthly cycles, regardless of when an invoice is actually approved and ready to pay.
That gap between approved and paid is where most of the delay actually lives, and it rarely shows up in a way that gets fixed on its own.
Regulators Are Starting to Respond
The UK government published its formal response to a consultation on late payment reform on 24 March 2026, confirming a package of measures designed to improve payment practices and act as a deterrent to the worst offenders. It is a meaningful step, but regulation alone will not fix a payment process that is still fundamentally manual.
For most businesses, the more immediate lever is not waiting for policy to catch up. It is looking honestly at how long an approved invoice sits before it is actually paid, and why.
What Faster Payment Processing Actually Requires
Paying on time is rarely about wanting to pay late. It is about visibility. Finance teams need to know, in real time, which invoices are approved and ready to pay, rather than reconstructing that picture manually before each payment run.
That shift, from batch-based, manually reconciled payment processing to a continuous, automated one, is what closes the gap between when an invoice is approved and when it is actually paid, on both sides of the Atlantic.
Stop letting process be the reason you pay late.
AP Automation connects invoice software and payments processing into one continuous flow, so approved invoices get paid on time, every time.
